Stainless Steel Cookware

I was recently given a new stainless steel cookware set for Christmas from my parents. I have been complaining about my cheap teflon cookware for the longest time. Teflon is reasonably priced, and it always starts out so nice, but then it scratches inside the pan and rusts on the outside. So disappointing!

The stainless steel has been amazing! If you can afford it, purchasing stainless steel that is labeled 18/10 is preferred. The 18 refers to the percentage of chromium and the 10 refers to 10% nickel. You can buy stainless steel cookware as 18/0, 18/8, and 18/10. The higher the nickel content (again the second number), the better the quality of the stainless steel. 18/10 stainless steel cookware is non magnetic, offers better shine, and is rust resistant. It also conducts heat well. The thing about using stainless steel is that because it is such a high conductor of heat, you should always start out using your cookware anywhere from low to medium heat. Please read the instructions thoroughly, as they will vary from brand to brand. If you follow their recommendations, you will find how easily and better these products cook!

Care and maintenance are equally important. My mom recommend occasional cleaning with a brand called Bar Keepers Friend. It is sold at Target, Publix, and Dollar General. It works well, but I found that using Weiman's Stainless Steel cleaner that I use on my stainless steel appliances really created a shine. In all honesty, I could not find any information on Weiman's product website as to whether it is recommended to use the cleaner on cookware. Please do your own research and also it is very important to rinse well with warm water after using these types of cleaners.
